Ecosia is a new search engine based on Bing and Yahoo functionality which donates 80% of all the sponsored-link income to WWF rainforest protection projects.
So every click on a sponsored ad within Ecosia translates into either cents for the environment - or cents for generating more cents for the environment.
Cents may not sound like much, but they certainly add up. From its inception until December 2010, Ecosia was able to generate just under 125,000 Euros (164,000 USD) for its rainforest protection program with the WWF – and that in just the first year!
An average internet user can protect about 2,000 square metres of rainforest every year by using Ecosia – this is about the size of an ice hockey field. If only 1% of global internet users accessed Ecosia for their web searches, we could save a rainforest area as big as Switzerland each year."
